Clothes!

Hello everyone!

First of all we would like to welcome two new members of our lovely MPP family, Emilia and Paizley. You have both settled into our class so well and we have had so much fun getting to know you.

For our first week back at school we practised all of the letters we have learnt so far; we reminded ourselves of what letters we have learnt about. We learnt about each other’s families and this allowed us to share our different holiday celebrations. Some of the children were surprised to learn that not everyone celebrates Christmas! We also got to play with our friends again!

We then began our new IPC unit Clothes with our wonderful Entry Point. All the children dressed up in the colours of their flag or in traditional clothes from their home country. We were able to discuss the different colours, patterns and types of clothes that we each wear and talk about when we wear our outfits. Then we had a red carpet walk with all of Pre-Primary and we had lots of fun showing off our wonderful clothes to each other! We have also enjoyed two more special clothes days – Blue day and Odd Sock day! The children have really enjoyed dressing up and showing their clothes to each other.

We built our classroom clothes shop, making a wonderful, colourful sign so that people know what they will find inside the shop. A lot of the children have also been very generous and brought clothes in to share with their friends. In our shop we have learnt about being the customer and the shop assistant. Some of the children have also played a stylist and chosen outfits for their friends to wear! We are learning how to fold some clothes and hang them onto clothes hangers too!

We also learnt about patterns and designs on clothes, looked at the different patterns and designs on our own clothes, and discussed what we thought about them. We looked at the different colours clothes come in and talked about how material is dyed to create these different colours for our clothes. We learnt about how clothes are made by cutting out the shape you need and then stitching materials together. We made patterns in paint and learnt about all the different names for various patterns such as polka dots, zig-zags, swirls, stripes, chequered etc.

We created an experiment with two different materials to see what works best. First we made a bag from laminated paper and soft wool. We learnt how to bring the two materials together with a basic stitch. We found that the bag came apart easily and that if we were to put something inside it would probably fall out. So we decided that we would also need to use glue to keep our bag together.

Then we used stronger paper and plastic string, and we found that this bag was much better at keeping small things inside but that we wouldn’t be able to fill it with sand!

Next week we will be learning about how clothes are made, from sheep’s wool to the cotton plant and clothes made from plastic! Don’t forget that this Friday is Funky Hat Friday, we are looking forward to seeing some very interesting hats!
