Houses and Homes!

There has been great learning happening in upper pre-primary. The houses and homes unit has been a great success!  After our entry point we began our study of houses by taking a walk in our local neighbourhood. The children discovered many kinds of houses that led to different discussions about the kinds of windows, doors, chimneys, gardens and more that they saw. On our walk we were so lucky to see a new house that is in the process of being built. This has been very interesting, we follow its progress every week on our way to the swimming pool! The children are very excited to see the house when it is finished! Inspired by what they saw the children have designed and painted their own dream house using a box. The houses look fantastic! When they were all finished the children had lots of fun putting them together to make their own little town using playmobile people to add to their wonderful playing!

The children have also learnt about different kinds of houses and homes around the world. For this work the children are becoming more familiar with our world map. They have been introduced to caves, mud houses, igloos, tepees, trailers, houses on stilts, boat houses and houses in space (space stations!). They drew beautiful pictures to show their learning. Following up from this work the children also made their own little caves using clay!

The children enjoyed sending a surprise letter to their home address. Hope you liked it! They also enjoyed visiting a real architect’s office. The architect showed them plans of a house on paper, then a 3d version on the computer. He also showed different materials they use in designing a house. It was very interesting! I am sure we will have a few future architects in our class!

The children have heard many different stories, songs and poems about houses and have also been introduced to the names of different animal homes.

Our exit point, a trip to the castle in Gent was a wonderful way to end our unit. We were very lucky to have a guide and a special tour arranged for children. They used their imagination and went back in time to the Middle Ages where they became knights! They had to help the queen (our guide) to find different clues in each room. They had lots of fun as they pretended to draw their swords and protect the castle against attack!

Our last week has been all about ‘Halloween’. I hope they don’t make you too scared with our spooky house song! And thank you for all the yummy snacks you sent, we had a lovely party!

The children have had a great first half term, they have made lots of progress and are eager to learn. In numeracy they have worked hard writing their numerals correctly and have started their first numeracy book ‘Mathemagic'.  In language they have also completed their first Jolly Phonics workbook and have started the second workbook. There is a great buzz of reading in the class as all the children have begun blending the sounds to read little words! Well done everyone and have a lovely holiday!

Enjoy the photos!
