Learning about bears!

Hello and welcome back to the MPP blog!

First we would like to say a big hello to Abdulrahman who has settled in fantastically and makes a wonderful addition to our class family!

After the half term break we began our new IPC unit ‘Bears’. Our Entry Point was a great success and the children really enjoyed their teddy bear picnic. We made our own sandwiches (one for us and one for our teddy of course!). Then we joined the rest of Pre-Primary for our picnic with all our teddies and sandwiches. We also played some teddy bear games and had a teddy bear race too!

Our bears unit was super exciting with lots of interesting things to learn and do. We learnt about the 8 species of bears, the children learnt some basic facts about the bears and then they imagined and practised what it would be like to be each bear. We also learnt about what countries bears lived in and explored what their habitats were like.

We read the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and turned our role-play area into the ‘three bears’ house. We painted the bricks and flowers onto our house. We made three different sized bowls and beds (for baby bear, mummy bear and daddy bear). We also found out what the bears were eating in the story and made some yummy porridge! The children really enjoyed making the ‘three bears’ house, the bowls and beds and, of course, the porridge! They also enjoyed role-playing with the masks, pretending to be the three bears and Goldilocks.

We also read the book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and we learnt the song too! The children really enjoyed this book and finally we were able to go on our own bear hunt around the school. We had to go through swishy swashy grass, a deep, cold river, thick, oozy mud, a swirling, whirling snowstorm and a forest, then we found a cave and inside the cave was a BEAR!

For our Exit Point we went to the zoo with UPP and saw lots of different types of animals. We even saw a spectacled bear! The trip was a great success and the children had lots of fun!

We learnt all about spring, how flowers grow and bloom in spring, how animals have babies, how the weather begins to change and how the bears living in the colder countries come out of hibernation. We also painted a large cherry blossom tree and made some spring flowers for our classroom door (which changes with each new season). This week we made our Easter baskets and today we had an Easter egg hunt!

We have had lots of fun during the past 4 weeks learning about our letter sounds! We have made lions, monsters, night skies and octopuses! The children have produced some beautiful work, demonstrating how far they have come from the start of the year. They should all be really proud of their efforts and hard work!

We have continued to build upon our maths skills, practicing counting, recognising and writing our numbers. We have continued to work on our addition skills and learnt about some basic subtractions! The children really love learning about numbers and they continue to work hard on their new mathematical skills!

Finally we would like to wish Lana, Minami and Hiromi all the best as they move to Miss Mia’s class. We will miss you being in our classroom but we know we will see you around the school every day and that you’ll have lots of fun in UPP!

Have a wonderful Easter break everyone; see you back at school in April!
