Upper-Primary - Ms Kelsey

Kimono demonstration

Today in the Primary class we were lucky to have Tomomi visit and share a part of her Japanese culture with us.

Miss Maija was the model while Tomomi carefully arranged the beautiful silk kimono and obi belt.

Idil and Alana also wore an obi belt tied into a bow. In the afternoon we also made sushi together! Thank-you Tomomi!

Sports Day

Sports Day

On Thursday the 6th of June, 2013, ISG school went to Team Adventure in Deinze for a Sports Day. The primary and pre-primary pupils did different activities.

Pupils met up at school and took a train to Deinze. It was a sunny day! They walked a long way to a park and ate their snack. Then the staff from Team Adventure picked them up and took them to the big building where all the activities took place. Pupils did a treasure hunt, archery, an indoor bouncy castle and an outdoor pirate ship. During the treasure hunt the pupils searched for pictures and collected points for the team. Pupils played dodge ball in the bouncy castle, and in the pirate ship they climbed a mast to bring coins to the middle of the mast. It was lots of fun! Pupils had lunch and the staff from Team Adventure gave them orange juice or choclate milk.

It was a fantastic day! The pupil's favourite activity was the indoor bouncy house. It was a hot, hot day! Pupils came back to school, tired and a bit grumpy, but Ms.Sonja gave them some lovely ice-cream and then they were happy again!

Sports Day

On Thursday 6th June, ISG school had a sports day. Pre-primary and the primary class went with Miss Corine, Miss Maija and Miss Maud. We went to a sports hall in Deinze. First everyone walked to the train station. We had to run onto the train because we were late. The train took us to Deinze.

Once we got off the train we walked to the park.  We had our snack at the playground. When our snack was finished we were able to play. After that we went in cars to the sports hall.

At the Team Adventure sports hall we did lots of fun activities. First we had to look for hidden clues in the inside playground. Following that we used a bow and arrow to try and shoot at a target. Archery was Alana’s favourite activity. After that we played horse in a huge bouncy castle and dodgeball. William and Vedant loved playing dodgeball. Idil said that all the activities were her favourite.

We did many different activities on sports day. At the end of the day everyone was tired and happy, except some people had hurt themselves so they were sore.

Monday afternoon in Primary

Today is Monday, June 3rd 2013.

We now have had most of the lessons today, this the very first Monday in the month of June. School ends on Friday June 28th, so we don't have that many days to go now. Summer holiday is getting closer! We still have many things to learn, though, and lots of challenges, before we can relax and start the holiday! Our teacher just handed out our homework. This week, we have numeracy (basic facts and measure length), literacy (spelling words, books to read and texts to work with), but this week we don't have any IPC. It takes some time to glue the homework sheets into the homework book, since we all have different homework assignments, because we are of different ages and we don't know the same things, or speak English on the same level. It is always interesting to compare your homework with your neighbour, and see what he or she has to work with during the week! This week pupils are working with "shorter/taller", "estimate length" and "perimeter and area" - so the homework often challenges the same area, but at different levels.

After putting the homework in our bags, we can sit down and read for a little while. This Monday we could choose if we wanted to read or if we wanted to continue working with an art assignment, where we used a technique called "quilling". Some of us really liked to try this new technique, while others found it a bit more challenging. Some of us enjoyed sitting down on the carpet, with a book in our hand, and just read quietly for a few minutes. We were quite tired today, so we really enjoyed the calm end of this Monday!

Greetings from Primary

PS. If you are curious, the green plants that grow in the middle of the classroom, are the white beans that we planted a few weeks ago! They have grown a lot since we put the small beans in the soil! The longest beanstalk now starts to reach up towards the ceiling.

Excellence and enjoyment

International Primary Curriculum covers a whole range of exciting and interesting Units of Work. They offer opportunities for differentiation and multiculturalism, which epitomize our school. IPC lessons are cross-curricular are based around a Unit of Work. Learning objectives include learning goals, subject goals and personal goals. All the IPC learning objectives include development of knowledge, skills and understanding; an essential combination to ensure the most effective learning experience.

Building a tippy tap

A tippy tap is a simple device for hand washing with running water. In some countries people don’t have access to running clean water. This economical and effective station encourages proper hand washing. A container of about 5 liter with a small hole near the cap is filled with water and tipped with a stick and rope tied through a hole in the cap. As only the soap is touched with the hands, the device is very hygienic. During our lesson we worked in two groups. Upper primary pupils were able to build a tippy tap more independently following instructions whilst lower primary pupils received more help.  Both groups had to do lots of digging, attaching and assembling. A great activity to work on team work!

A trip to Ostend

Ostend is the largest city on the Belgian coast located in the Flemish province of West Flanders. During our stroll on the coastline we did a research about shells and their origins. We were also observing costal birds such as sea gulls.  The wind was so strong and gusty that it even blew our bird worksheet away! We also discussed the direction of the wind. Our guide told us some unbelievable stories about a mermaid and a drunken sailor. After the tour of Mercator, a sailing vessel, we enjoyed our lunch indoors.
