Animals!!

Our little explorers had so many wonderful experiences learning about animals! The activities planned within our Animals Unit covered different learning strands in the following ways:

Independence and Interdependence

They showed great care and responsibility—keeping quiet and respectful at the zoo, gently petting and feeding farm animals, and even walking a dog at the animal shelter. We also talked about the important people who help animals when they’re sick, like vets.

Games were a big part of our learning too! The children had fun playing ‘Concept’ board game, bingo, pet smash, dominoes, and ‘Poop’ memory—great opportunities to practice patience and coping with little wins and losses.

One of the highlights was our assembly performance! The children proudly recited the Jump or Jiggle poem and sang Never Smile at a Crocodile with big smiles and plenty of enthusiasm. They also got to share a few sentences about their favorite animals, showing off their amazing artwork to go along with it.

Communication

Mystery readers shared animal tales in different languages, and the children created matching ‘Thank You’ cards. Many other animal stories and fables were also read in class, and the children practiced using descriptive language when playing ‘Who Am I?’.
The learners researched their favourite farm and wild animals and recorded their knowledge in a “book.” They also had opportunities to decode and trace animal names.

The children read and followed a recipe, carefully measuring out the ingredients and observing with fascination as the cottage cheese curdled. The grand finale was the tasting their homemade cheese omelette!
They also measured and compared animal footprints, and the golden learners discovered just how long a blue whale is—more than 100 slippers were needed! The children also compared quantities and practiced using the crocodile mouths of the greater than and less than symbols. They sang a variety of theme-related songs, including classics such as “Old McDonald” and “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.”

Exploring

Our curious little learners discovered what makes each animal group unique, learning all about mammals—plus a few surprising exceptions! They also explored where different animals live, sorting them into their habitats and continents, and even looked at the wildlife right here in our local environment.
Warm Sweater Day gave us the perfect chance to talk about caring for our planet and its animals. The idea of endangered species really got the children thinking.
In our role-play area, imagination ran wild as children became animals themselves or set off on a safari adventure—after buying their entrance tickets, of course!
Creativity and problem-solving were a big part of the unit too. They recreated animal patterns, printed different footprints, and tackled spatial challenges such as maps, building instructions, offline programming mazes, and logic smart game puzzles in addition to regular puzzles.

Healthy Living

Throughout the unit, the children took responsibility for their own learning by choosing which activities to focus on—whether during choosing time or when selecting an animal to paint or research.
The children had plenty of opportunities to practice focusing for longer periods, helping them build their concentration skills.

The biggest highlight? Our exciting full-day trip to the zoo! The children amazed us with their independence and responsibility as they explored the incredible world of animals up close. It was a day filled with wonder.

It has been a fantastic unit filled with curiosity, hands-on experiences, and exciting discoveries!
